Paris Olympics | Hoosier athletes to watch on Monday, Aug. 5

Dozens of Olympians have Indiana connections. Here are the results of their competitions on Monday, Aug. 5.

PARIS, France — The Paris 2024 Olympics are underway in France, and Hoosier athletes are already competing to represent Team USA. In fact, the first two medals the United States won came from Indiana athletes.

Here is how the athletes with Indiana connections did on Monday, Aug. 5:

Daryn Wright

Daryn Wright, who is from Plainfield and goes to Purdue University, competed in the 10m platform diving event.

Wright finished 19th in the preliminary round with a score of 272.25, which 4.75 points behind the 18th place finisher. Wright will be a reserve in the semifinal round, should anyone not be to compete.

The semifinal is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET Monday. The event will be available to stream on Peacock.

The final of the women's 10m platform is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET Tuesday, Aug. 6. The event will be available to stream on Peacock.

Piper Kelly

Indianapolis resident Piper Kelly competed in the women's speed climbing event, which made its debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In the qualification seeding heats, Kelly finished ninth, with her best time of 7.39 seconds.

In the qualification elimination heats, Kelly lost to Indonesia's Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi 6.38 seconds to 8.43 seconds. She was 1.17 seconds behind the eighth person to advance to the quarterfinals.

Chase Budinger

Chase Budinger, who played for the Indiana Pacers in the 2015-2016 season, competed in the beach volleyball competition.

Budinger and partner Miles Evans lost to Norway in two sets, 21-16 and 21-14, in the round of 16, eliminating them from the event.

In pool play, Budinger and Evans defeated France in two sets, lost to the Netherlands in two sets and lost to Spain in two sets. 

In the lucky loser round on Saturday, Aug. 3, Budinger and Evans defeated Australia in two sets to advance to the round of 16.

Matt Anderson

Zionsville's Matt Anderson is hoping to bring home another medal in men's volleyball. He won bronze in the 2020 Olympics. 

The U.S. beat Brazil in the quarterfinals 3-1: 26-24, 28-30, 25-19, 25-19. Anderson led the team with 20 points.

In the semifinals, the U.S. faces Poland at 10 a.m. ET Wednesday, Aug. 7. The game will be available to stream on Peacock.

The U.S. went undefeated in pool play, beating Argentina 3-0, Germany 3-2 and Japan 3-1.
