INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay confirmed rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will have season-ending shoulder surgery.
Richardson injured his right throwing shoulder during the Colts' Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 8.
"After consultation with our medical staff, Anthony, and those close to him, it has been determined that he will undergo surgery to repair his injured shoulder, which will end his season," Irsay posted on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. "Anthony is a competitor, and we know how difficult and disappointing this is for him and our team. We collected several medical opinions and we felt this was the best course of action for his long-term health. We anticipate a full recovery and there is no doubt Anthony has a promising future. In the meantime, I love the fight of this team and I’m excited for the opportunity we have ahead of us. It starts this week with Cleveland."
Richardson was injured on a 4-yard run with 4:29 left in the first half against the Titans when he fell awkwardly to the ground with two Titans draped around him.
Richardson stayed down for several minutes before walking slowly to the injury tent, his shoulder noticeably drooping to the right side. After several more minutes in the injury tent, he headed to the locker room with the team's medical staff.
Richardson was placed on the injured reserve list after the game against Tennessee. The following game, Gardner Minshew threw three interceptions and lost a fumble in Sunday's 37-20 loss at Jacksonville.

“I thought (Richardson) was electric every time he was on the football field and gave us a chance to win football games," head coach Shane Steichen said during a press conference Wednesday morning.
In his five games with the Colts, Richardson threw for 577 yards and three touchdowns.
The Colts are now 3-3 on the season as they host the Cleveland Browns Sunday, Oct. 22 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
