Colts WR Josh Downs injured at training camp

The receiver had to be helped from the field after a tackle by safety Nick Cross.

WESTFIELD, Ind. — UPDATE: ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler reports Josh Downs has a high ankle sprain and could be out for a month

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs has an injured ankle after he was tackled to the ground during practice at training camp.

Safety Nick Cross reportedly tackled Downs to the ground.

Downs was running an out-route on grass that was slick from the morning's light rain.

Downs was already slipping when Cross tackled him low, taking out Downs' legs.

Trainers had to help a visibly-frustrated Downs onto a cart because he could not put any weight on the injured leg.

All of this happened during 7x7 drills, when players are not wearing full protective gear and the defense isn't supposed to tackle.

Just before 1 p.m. on Aug. 7, ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler posted an update on the injury.

Head coach Shane Steichen was visibly angry after the play.

Talking to the press, Steichen said, "We have to be smart. We're competing like crazy, but we have to stay up."

Downs has been impressive during training camp so far.

13Sports reporter Dominic Miranda has reported on the chemistry Downs has built with quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Downs caught 68 passes for 771 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 2023 season.

He was shaping up to be a key part of a Colts offense that was looking to be dangerous with Richardson and running back Jonathan Taylor healthy.

Cross is competing to be the starting free safety for a depleted Colts secondary.
