INDIANAPOLIS — Students at an Indianapolis public school are getting a brand new playground, thanks to lots of volunteer help and a boost from the Indianapolis Colts.
13News was at Ernie Pyle Elementary School Tuesday for the start of a big project to make sure the kids have the perfect place to have some fun.
It was a rainy morning, but that didn't stop Colts representatives and a bunch of volunteers from getting to work.
It's a dream come true for some of these students.
On Sunday, running back Jonathan Taylor was running over the Chicago Bears. Tuesday, he traded his cleats for a wrench.
"They've been out here since 6:30 and we're still rolling," Taylor said. "Just something special to do for the young kids so that they're able to have a great time, whether they're learning or playing and having fun."
JT and an army of other volunteers transformed the run down playground into a state-of-the-art escape for elementary school kids.
"I'm pretty comfortable, like, just like with a drill and a hammer," said Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman, who was putting his skills to work on a new swing set. "It's bigger than just football, right? So just, like, whenever I can give back, I'm just always looking for like a chance and, you know, like is a really great thing."
The Colts and their friends made it happen with little manual labor and love.
For me, I just know that when this opportunity arises and me, growing up, there weren't many of those opportunities that I saw, so for me to have that opportunity to give to another child or multiple other kids, it means a lot to me because I know that they were very limited when I was growing up," Taylor said.
Even on their day off, the Colts make a winning play.
