INDIANA, USA — The penultimate week of the regular season for small college football has finished and while FBS and FCS teams in the state of Indiana still have a few weeks left, it's been pandemonium in Division II, III, and the NAIA.
IU football was the only FBS team to record a win in week ten. The Ball State Cardinals lost their first game of "MACtion" play on Wednesday while the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost a heartbreaker to Clemson. The Purdue Boilermakers struggled mightily against Michigan and have now lost six games this season.
In the FCS, Butler Bulldogs quarterback Bret Bushka put up video game-like numbers in the team's win over Morehead State. The Valparaiso Beacons won their first game since September when they posted a victory at home against Dayton.
Meanwhile, the Indiana State Sycamores remained winless following their loss to Youngstown State. The Sycamores have two more chances this season to score a victory.
The UIndy Greyhounds were dealt their first loss of the season after narrowly falling to McKendree. Quarterback Gavin Sukup completed 18 out of 32 of his passes for 239 yards but two interceptions and four sacks doomed the Greyhounds. UIndy had moved up to eighth in the AFCA poll, but will most likely drop in the rankings next week.
In Division III, the DePauw Tigers had a much needed bye-week before they play the Wabash Little Giants in next week's 129th Monon Bell game. Wabash put up 50 points against Hiram for the team's seventh win of the season. DePauw however, boasts an undefeated 9-0 record.
Elsewhere in Division III is was blowout city. The Franklin Grizzlies dominated the Manchester Spartans while the Hanover Panthers ran up the score against the Anderson Ravens.
The Grizzlies and the Panthers will meet next Saturday for the 93rd Victory Bell game while either Anderson and Manchester will score their first win of the season in next week's Bronze Ball game.
The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers do not have a traditional rivalry game next week, but they do have major momentum after winning a high-scoring affair against Defiance. Fightin' Engineers quarterback Miguel Roberson had three touchdown passes and 192 total passing yards in the win while running back Grant Ripperda rushed 38 times for 226 net yards and five touchdowns.
The Trine Thunder took down Hope College ahead of next week's season finale against Kalamazoo College.
A thrilling game in the NAIA between the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats and the Marian Knights ended with a narrow victory for the Wildcats to keep the team undefeated and handing the Knights their first loss of the year.
The St. Francis Cougars snapped a two-game losing streak with a win over Concordia while the Taylor Trojans came up short against Lawrence Tech.
