GREENCASTLE, Ind. (WTHR) - DePauw head football coach Bill Lynch is heading into retirement after a career that saw him lead four football programs in Indiana.
Lynch, who has coached the Tigers for the past seven seasons and eight overall, will officially retire January 2. The announcement comes on the heels of DePauw's 17-14 win over Wabash in the annual Monon Bell game last Saturday.
Including the 2004 season, Lynch recorded a 53-27 record at DePauw.
He started his college coaching career at Butler University, his alma mater, in 1977 before leaving to become the offensive coordinator at Northern Illinois in 1984. After a year as quarterback coach with the USFL's Orlando Renegades, he returned to Butler as the Bulldogs' head coach, amassing a 36-12-3 record in five seasons.
He left Butler for Muncie in 1990 to become the offensive coordinator at Ball State for three seasons, returning to lead the Cardinals after two years on the staff at Indiana University. Lynch was 37-53 at Ball State.
In 2005, he was named associate head coach and offensive coordinator at IU, where he succeeded head coach Terry Hoeppner when the Hoosiers' coach passed away after a battle with cancer.
He amassed a 19-30 record in four seasons in Bloomington, including a bowl berth in his first season.
He was inducted into the Butler Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
