INDIANAPOLIS — March Madness is upon us at every level of college basketball.
At the Division I level, teams are working their way through conference tournaments to punch their tickets to the Big Dance. At Division II, teams are gearing up already for the NCAA Tournament.
Teams like the University of Indianapolis are hosting right here in Indy for the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Fresh off winning back-to-back regular season Great Lakes Valley Conference titles, the Hounds are looking for more. They're the first team to win back-to-back regular season titles since 2000.
"We have a great group of guys that have been here for three or four years now," said UIndy head coach Paul Corsaro. "We've been able to retain them and their experience and leadership are really what's pushed us over the edge and allow us to make history."
Junior guard Jarvis Walker agreed.
"It means a lot. I mean, making history always means something," Walker said. "Us doing this and doing this with my guys, it's just a testament to how hard we work and putting it together for two years shows consistency. I'm proud of it and I know the guys are too."
UIndy opens up tournament play against William Jewell, the team that bounced them from the GLVC tournament just last weekend. The Greyhounds hosted the Midwest Regional a year ago and were knocked out in the quarterfinals. They're looking to change the script this year.
"I'd be lying if I said our goal wasn't a national championship. That is the goal, we want to win a national championship," Corsaro said. "You always want to play on your home court. We love Indianapolis. We want our home fans here. We've turned this place into a great college basketball environment. We've gotten great support and we're looking forward to seeing that on Saturday."
The team begins its pursuit of a national championship this Saturday at 5 p.m. at Nicoson Hall as the madness continues here in March.
