'Somebody’s gonna get hurt' | Purdue coach criticizes lack of crowd control during court stormings

“I don’t know why institutions aren’t ready for it. What did you think was going to happen?” Purdue men's basketball head coach Matt Painter asked.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue men's basketball head coach Matt Painter says college athletics venues must do more to control the crowds when fans storm the court.

His pointed comments came during a post-game press conference minutes after the Nebraska men’s basketball team beat Purdue on Nebraska’s home court. Fans stormed the court to celebrate.

“I don’t know why institutions aren’t ready for it. What did you think was going to happen?” asked Painter, who added his team hasn’t lost a game in the last three seasons without the opposing team’s fans storming the court.

“A student from Nebraska should be able to storm the court. Right? We’re cool. Just get ready for it. We’re struggling in our conference with that,” Painter said. “Someone’s going to get hurt, and it’s going to be a student, could be one of their guys, one of our guys, somebody working the scorer’s bench. Could be anybody. But I don’t know why people don’t get ahead of it. It’s happened a lot, and I don’t understand it.”

Unranked Nebraska beat No.1 Purdue 88-72 Tuesday night.

The Boilermakers now have a 14-2 record so far this season.
