'Cultural Corridor,' 'Intersection' to offer NBA All-Star fan events downtown

Two hotspots for NBA All-Star fans will be “The Intersection” at Circle Centre Mall and the “Cultural Corridor” downtown.

INDIANAPOLIS — Circle Centre Mall is hosting “The Intersection" for NBA All-Star Weekend. The goal is to be the hub of non-ticketed activity for fans.

“Really, Circle Centre Mall is the intersection of basketball, culture, fashion, food and fun,” said Luke Aeschliman, VP and senior general manager at Circle Centre Mall.

To bring that to life, the mall brought in more than 20 pop-ups with national brands like Under Armour, Foot Locker and Mitchell & Ness. There are also local brands like Full Court Press and Klooz Brews.

The mall also extended its hours and will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight starting Thursday, Feb. 15.

“As all the late-night activities wind down, finish your night with us. Come in. Feel the energy of a DJ, and whether you are visiting retail, experiences or just grabbing a bite, we are the place to do it,” Aeschliman said.

13News got an inside look at some of the shops and activities that make up "The Intersection:"

Curry's Gameroom

Curry’s Gameroom, a retro arcade space focused on Golden State Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry, opens Friday.

“If you think about an athlete like Stephen Curry and what it means to really ‘Be on fire’ and ‘Boom chakalaka,’ it ties back to Stephen. So we are inviting the public, all of the folks and fans out in Indianapolis, to come inside Curry’s Gameroom and experience that with us,” said Nick Hood, with Under Armour.

There will be pop-a-shot, “Curry Jam” arcade games, air hockey and PS3 game consoles.

Mitchell & Ness

Philadelphia-based Mitchell & Ness also has a pop-up shop at the mall. It is selling exclusive clothing for All-Star Weekend.

“Mitchell & Ness always has a presence at All-Star Weekend, but this year for Indianapolis being the mecca of basketball, we have gone bigger and better than ever. We have more gear and more drops than ever before, exclusive to Indiana and the Indiana All-Star Game when it was here back in 1985,” said Jason Zone Fisher, the NBA All-Star host and a representative of Mitchell & Ness.

Fisher said there will be live podcast tapings, along with designers and players stopping by.

The store is open now through the weekend, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

NBPA Brotherhood Deli

NBPA Brotherhood Deli is an immersive retail experience where “FIRE” brands are highlighted. Those are brands founded, invested in, respected or endorsed by NBA players.

“What you will see is a collection of merchandise that is inspired by our NBA players, as well as FIRE brands that we love,” said Keisha Wright, senior vice president of partnerships and purpose at THINK450.

Fans can come in for free, but you must register first. There will be player meet-and-greets and DJ sets, along with food and drinks.

There is also a hidden bar area on the side.

It kicks off Friday and is open through the weekend from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Hoosier Hysteria

One of the “Hoosier Hysteria” basketball balls is also on display in the mall. JD Bills is the artist behind it and said his theme is “Unique High School Mascots.”

The Indy Arts Council chose 24 artists to create giant basketballs that tell Indiana high school basketball stories.

“It’s super fun to be part of this experience. There are 24 diverse artists throughout the city working on these basketballs and having my work shown to people not just from Indiana, but all over the world,” Bills said.

More information

The Intersection will also have live performances from local artists throughout the weekend in the Dining Pavilion. A list of all the events can be found here.

Regal Cinema will have special screenings of fan-favorite basketball movies, including “Love & Basketball” on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and “Space Jam” on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets for both will be $5 and are on sale now on the Regal Cinema's website.

Curators Deonna Craig, Kia Davis and Alan Mills will transform the 19,000 square feet of the Indianapolis Artsgarden into the fine art fair BUTTER. There will be exhibitions alongside a Creative Summit.

The host committee is also opening “The Suite” at the former Rock Bottom site. It will feature the Henderson Bar, food from the International Marketplace, music curated by Chreece Presents: Nap City The Basement, comedy by Made Man Improv and retail curated by Cargo Streetwear Boutique.

The former Pearings Café will be converted into a pop-up coffee shop called Plaid & Pearls Coffee. It is a local woman-owned business.

These spaces are free to the public, and open on Friday and through the weekend.
