Pacers great George McGinnis elected to 2017 Basketball Hall of Fame

Pacers legend George McGinnis who signed with the Pacers in 1971 when they were in the ABA has been elected to the the Hall of Fame Class of 2017.

INDIANAPOLIS - Pacers legend George McGinnis who signed with the Pacers in 1971 when they were in the ABA has been elected to the the Hall of Fame Class of 2017.

McGinnis was from Indianapolis and was a star at Washington where he was named Mr. Basketball in 1969 after leading the team to an undefeated season and state championship. He went on to play at IU and earned third-team All-American honors after his sophomore season.

While with the Pacers he helped them win two championships in 1972 and 1973 and was co-MVP of the league, sharing the honor with Julius Erving. He went on to spend five seasons in the NBA with Philadelphia and Denver before returning to the Pacers in 1980 and retiring in 1982.

McGinnis is the fifth Pacers player or coach to be elected to the Hall of Fame.

Also elected to the Hall of Fame were NBA great Tracy McGrady, Kansas University head coach Bill Self, women's basketball legend Rebecca Lobo, Notre Dame women's basketball coach Muffet McGraw, Texas high school coach Robert Hughes, former Chicago Bulls executive Jerry Krause, former NCAA vice president Tom Jernstedt, European star Nikos Galis and two Harlem Globetrotters legends - Zack Clayton and Mannie Jackson.
