SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WTHR) – It’s a treat to watch Liz Power when her husband Will is on the racetrack.
On Sunday, we asked Liz, a graduate of Hamilton Southeastern High School and Purdue University, to describe how she was doing during the final laps of the 102nd Indianapolis 500.
“A wreck,” she said, laughing. “A nervous wreck. It was weird. I had this - I know it probably didn’t look that way – a calm, but at the same time I was just, like, ‘okay, let it be over, let it be done.’”
In those final moments on Sunday, she was working a water bottle pretty hard, twisting it, clutching it and chewing on it.
“I was just laughing with his guys,” Liz said. “Before we even went green I had already annihilated a bottle. I think I’ve gone through five. That one was really done.”
Will Power hasn’t been shy about expressing how much he wanted an Indianapolis win. We asked Liz if she could put the post-race feeling into words.
“I’m so proud of him, I’m so proud of the guys on the team,” she said. “It’s hard to just sum it up because he’s wanted it so bad. He’s worked so hard and it’s just amazing. There’s so many other words to describe it, but I’m just so excited for him. He has said, ‘If I could just get that 500 win’ and I knew, eventually, one day it was going to happen.
