INDIANAPOLIS — Former IndyCar driver and 2003 ChampCar World Series champion Paul Tracy is recovering after being hit by a car while riding his bike on Friday.
According to a series of Instagram posts from the 55-year-old Canadian ex-racer, Tracy was riding his bike when he was hit by a white Mazda SUV. Tracy initially posted that the accident resulted in a dislocated shoulder, but in a follow-up post, Tracy said doctors had transferred him to a trauma center for three broken vertebrae in his lower back.
On Saturday, Tracy posted two videos to his Instagram account showing him riding a stationary bike with one reading "I can rest when I'm dead."
Tracy's IndyCar career spanned nearly 20 years, competing full or part time between 1991 and 2011. Following the unification between ChampCar and the Indy Racing League in early 2008, Tracy went into semi-retirement, running a handful of IndyCar races between 2008 and 2011.
Recently, Tracy served as a color commentator for NBC Sports' IndyCar broadcasts from 2014 until 2021. He competed in the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) with a best finish of third coming at Connecticut's Stafford Motor Speedway in 2022.
