Mario Andretti's wife, Dee Ann, passes away at the age of 76

The wife of 1969 Indianapolis 500 champion Mario Andretti has died.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The wife of 1969 Indianapolis 500 champion Mario Andretti has died.

Dee Ann Andretti passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 76. Her grandson, current IndyCar driver Marco Andretti, posted a photo of his grandparents on Instagram Tuesday.

"RIP Grammy Andretti. You will be missed," he wrote.

Andretti Autosport, owned by Dee Ann and Mario's son Michael, also posted a statement on Twitter:

According to Racer.com, Andretti was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack a few weeks ago and never regained consciousness.

She married Mario Andretti in 1961. The couple's sons, Michael and Jeff, both raced in the Indianapolis 500.

Mark Miles, president and CEO of Hulman & Company, released the following statement on behalf of IndyCar on Andretti's passing:

"Everyone at Hulman & Company sends our condolences to the Andretti family on the passing of Dee Ann Andretti. She was the matriarch of one of the most prominent families in motorsports history. It was with Dee Ann's love and support that her husband, children and grandchildren have thrived in racing for more than five decades, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and around the globe. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mario, their children Michael, Jeff and Barbie, and the rest of the Andretti family."
