IMS founders, racing legends honored with 'Final Finish Line' at Crown Hill Cemetery

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway were honored Sunday in a very special way.

A part of the historic track that they helped create is now going to be with them at their final resting place.

The "Final Finish Line" is a tribute to the IMS founders and other racing legends who are buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Sunday, they unveiled the honorary "yard of bricks" which includes some original culver bricks from IMS.

Organizers wanted to make sure their legacy lives on. They say this is a fitting tribute "to the men and women that have built a sport for which Indiana is known around the world."

"Carl Fisher was sort of the promoter of the group. He was the one who got a lot of the credit; it was his vision. But without Mr. Allison, Mr. Newby, Mr. Wheeler, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway doesn't happen. They were really the business partners that he surrounded himself with," IMS President Doug Boles explained. "So putting the four bricks together as that Final Yard Brick really tells the whole story, not just the story we all know."

Right after the unveiling, the oldest surviving pace car - a 1915 Packard - crossed the "Final Finish Line."
