Alexander Rossi wins the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500

The victory made him the first rookie to win the 500 since Helio Castroneves in 2001. He was so low on fuel, he ran out of gas on his victory lap and had to be towed in to Victory Lane.

3:39 p.m. When asked what he would remember most about winning the Indy 500, Rossi said, "I'll cherish the fact that at one point we were 33rd, and we rolled the dice."

3:30 p.m. Rookie Alexander Rossi has won the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. The victory made him the first rookie to win the 500 since Helio Castroneves in 2001. He was so low on fuel, he ran out of gas on his victory lap and had to be towed in to Victory Lane.

3:16 p.m. Some fans are beginning to leave early - not because the race isn't good enough, but because it's just too hot.

3:14 p.m. With 25 laps to go, Tony Kanaan was in the lead again.

3:03 p.m. Helio Castroneves had to take a 40 second pit stop to get an entirely new rear wing after minor contact earlier in the race.

3:00 p.m. Takuma Sato brushed the wall, leaving some debris on the track and causing a yellow flag on lap 164. The damage was minor enough, he was able to continue driving himself around the track and into pit lane.

2:46 p.m. A tire on Buddy Lazier's car wasn't secure enough, and came off as he left the pit. Track put under a yellow flag as the wheel jumped across the track and infield.

2:44 p.m. Plainfield EMS confirms they were called to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to help treat a surge in heat exhaustion complaints.

2:27 p.m. Townsend Bell will be penalized for the pit crash.

2:25 p.m. The pit lane crash made some serious changes to the leaderboard, with Alex Tagliani out front.

2:18 p.m. Helio Castroneves clipped Townsend Bell in the pits, sending Bell into Ryan Hunter-Reay. Castroneves was able to continue out of the pit, but Bell and Hunter-Reay were stuck in the pits.

2:15 p.m. Mikhail Aleshin crashed in Turn 1 into Turn 2 on lap 114. Conor Daly's car was also damaged. Both drivers appeared to be okay, but both were done for the day.

2:12 p.m. Sage Karam was released from the infield medical center after crash in lap 94.

2:10 p.m. The crowd got to their feet as Tony Kanaan displayed back to back impressive moves to get into second place, and then take the lead in lap 111.

2:01 p.m. At "halftime" of the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500, Bryan Clauson was in the lead.

1:50 p.m. Sage Karam crashed into the wall on Turn 1 in Lap 94. He managed to get out of the car on his own.

1:36 p.m. Ed Carpenter went back to the garage with an engine problem.

1:34 p.m. The yellow caution flag came out again in lap 72 for moisture on the track.

1:32 p.m. Simon Pagenaud was penalized and sent to the back of the field for bumping in the pits. 

1:20 p.m. Juan Pablo Montoya crashed in turn 2 on lap 64. He got out of the car and is okay.

1:12 p.m. After reviewing the pit contact, Will Power was penalized and put in the back of the field.

1:05 p.m. Under the yellow, most of the drivers took a pit immediately. Coming out of the pits, Will Power made contact with Tony Kanaan. Race Control is looking into it.

1:03 p.m. Buddy Lazier's crew started pushing him back to the track. Meanwhile, a yellow flag came out for debris on the track in in lap 47.

1:00 p.m. Townsend Bell took his first lead of the day in lap 44.

12:55 p.m. As other drivers began to pit, Ryan Hunter-Reay re-took the lead by lap 35. Josef Newgarden stayed in 2nd while Hinchcliffe's slow pit stop left him five seconds behind.

12:51 p.m. James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay pit at the same time, leaving Josef Newgarden to take the lead. Hunter-Reay got out quick, but Hinchcliffe was in for nearly 14 seconds.

12:45 p.m. Buddy Lazier experienced throttle issues from the very start. His crew eventually took the #4 car into the garage.

12:42 p.m.

12:38 p.m. Ryan Hunter-Reay got out to a quick start and held the lead in the early laps. On lap 11, though, pole sitter James Hinchcliffe took over the lead. Townsend Bell remained in 3rd.

12:30 p.m.: Drivers are under a green flag and the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 is officially underway!

12:20 p.m.: "Lady and Gentlemen: Start your engines!" Drivers are in their cars.
