INDIANAPOLIS — The first big accident of Fast Friday practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway involves a rookie.
Nolan Seigel had just set a lap of 228.742 mph and was exiting the south chute into turn 2 when his No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda snapped around just after the apex of the corner and slammed into the outside wall. The impact was on the left side of the car.
While sliding backwards, the car generated lift and caught air. The car flipped over onto one side and slid down the backstretch before coming to a rest.
"I'm so sorry, guys. I'm alright," Seigel can be heard saying over the radio as the car came to a stop.
The IndyCar safety team was on scene almost immediately and worked to flip the wrecked Dallara back onto its wheels. Once the car was upright, Seigel climbed out under his own power and was taken to the infield care center, as part of standard procedure.
Indy 500 practice was red flagged while crews worked to clean up the accident.
