Rain delays Wednesday practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Cars eventually got on track after another rain delay Wednesday, but a shower at the end of the day brought an early halt to practice.

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — We are now just 10 days away from the 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

Cars eventually got on track after another rain delay Wednesday, May 15, but a shower at the end of the day brought an early halt to practice.

Practice finally began at 3 p.m. Wednesday. For drivers, there are few things worse than having to wait.

"Especially, we haven't turned a lap like a few laps yesterday, but like it's opening day, opening day and it's getting closer," Track Team 13's Tony Kanaan said. "Today is Wednesday, people are getting in. Tomorrow will be probably the last day before you go to Fast Friday and try qualifying runs, so I can see the drivers getting antsy."

The drivers are going through a checklist of items. We asked Kanaan if that's typically what happens to get ready for qualifications.

"We have a plan," Kanaan said. "You know, some of the cars are doing qualifying runs, some of them are racing runs, but yeah, right now, you're basically trying to cover everything you can in one session."

Kanaan has been working with Kyle Larson recently.

"I'm trying to keep him calm because he's like, 'Hey, I'm losing track time,' but also trying to make him understand that although you need to run a lot, you also need to take the time to understand the car, this place. You gotta respect the place, so it's a stop-and-go thing, but he's doing pretty good," Kanaan said.

We asked Kanaan about the potential for new track records this year.

"I think weather is gonna play a big factor," Kanaan said. "Hopefully, it will be a calm wind day, and I can't wait to see them beat the records. It'll be fun."

The 108th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 26 and will air on WTHR Channel 13.
