INDIANAPOLIS — The move that won Josef Newgarden the 2023 Indianapolis 500 has officially been banned by the series.
Under IndyCar's new guidelines, released prior to the start of the 2024 season, drivers who are defending their position against another can no longer weave into the frontstretch's pit entry lane while using "the dragon" maneuver.
Drivers are still allowed to use "the dragon," (weaving back and forth on track in order to break the draft of the car behind) but IndyCar will now police how low the drivers go during the maneuver.
On the final lap of last year's "500," race winner Josef Newgarden drove across the track coming off of turn four and briefly went into the pit entry lane before darting back out onto the track right before reaching the inside wall's attenuator.
Under the new guidelines, drivers will be instructed not to race under the white line that extends out onto the track, guiding drivers to pit road.
