FISHERS, Ind. — Central Indiana's newest professional sports team has found its identity.
The Fishers Freight professional indoor football team will start play in 2025. The new name and logo was unveiled Friday morning.
The team's primary logo features a locomotive with gold stripes reminiscent of those on the Nickel Plate Road locomotive that runs through Hamilton County. The former Nickel Plate Station is a focal point of the Nickel Plate Trail in downtown Fishers.
According to the city of Fishers, the Nickel Plate Railroad was built in central Indiana in the late 1800s. Salathiel Fishers, a local entrepreneur, bought land near a planned stop in southern Hamilton County, from which the town of Fishers was built.
The Freight's colors are navy, gold and steel. A second monogram logo features the letters "FF" in the team's color scheme.
The team will play in the highly anticipated Fishers Event Center, which is currently under construction to host the Indy Fuel hockey team.
"Our games are being played when the NFL season is done. So, for the football enthusiasts, you don't have to take a break from football," Indoor Football League commissioner Todd Tryon said. "It is action-packed, and we always like to say we're going to throw a big party, and at some point, a football game is going to break out, and there is something for everybody."
There are currently 16 teams in the Indoor Football League in 12 states, including franchises in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. The 19-week regular season runs from March to July.
