Legendary Purdue basketball coach Gene Keady recovering from stroke

The Hall of Fame coach is expected to make a full recovery from a small stroke suffered last week.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind — Former Purdue University basketball coach Gene Keady is recovering from a stroke suffered last week.

The Purdue men's basketball team posted on X Monday afternoon that Keady suffered a "small stroke" last week and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. He has since been transferred to a rehabilitation facility. The team said he is expected to make a full recovery.

"Coach thanks everyone for their well-wishes," the team posted.

Keady, 88, led the Boilermakers from 1980 to 2005, winning 512 games and six Big Ten regular season championships. He coached Purdue to 17 appearances in the NCAA Tournament in those 25 years, reaching the Elite Eight in 1994 and 2000 and the Sweet Sixteen in 1988, 1998 and 1999.

He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year a record seven times and National Coach of the Year six times.

He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023, ten years after his induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
