INDIANAPOLIS — After leading a historic season for the Indiana State Sycamores men's basketball team, the Saint Louis Billikens announced they will be taking him away next year.
Josh Schertz was hired by Saint Louis after he led the Sycamores to its first 30-win season in 45 years and to an NIT championship game. The Billikens basketball team made the announcement on social media Saturday.
According to ISU, a contract extension was offered to Schertz through the 2029-2030 season, but he turned it down.
“The generous financial support of Sycamore donors made it possible for Indiana State University to offer Coach Schertz more than any other coach has ever been paid at Indiana State,” said Deborah J. Curtis, president of Indiana State University . “Coach Schertz's leadership has been the driving force behind rebuilding and elevating our NCAA Division I men’s basketball program and the team's success this year. We wish him the best in his future endeavors."
Schertz released a statement on social media Sunday afternoon confirming his move and thanking ISU.
The Sycamores ended the season with a 32-7 record after losing to Seton Hall in the NIT championship 79-77 Thursday. There was a lot of controversy on the decision to leave the team out of the NCAA tournament.
Schertz previously coached at Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee, where he pushed the team to three NCAA Division II Final Fours in 13 years before leaving for ISU in 2021.
He also won the Missouri Valley Coach of the Year award, along with the Hugh Durham Award for being the nation's top mid-major coach this year.
