Gene Keady reflects on rivalry, friendship with Bob Knight

"He was just a guy I highly respected. He was someone I knew was always going to do the right thing," Keady said.

INDIANAPOLIS — Gene Keady is reflecting on his rivalry and longtime friendship with the late Bob Knight.

Knight died last week at the age of 83.

The two legends are forever linked in those IU-Purdue games over more than two decades.

"He was just a guy I highly respected," Keady said. "He was someone I knew was always going to do the right thing. He's maybe the greatest coach of all time, I think, anyways. That's how it grew."

We asked Keady about his off-the-court relationship with Knight.

"I think we played golf a couple times, but that's about it. He was always busy recruiting and so was I," Keady said. "We became friends because I highly respected him. I knew he didn't cheat. He was maybe the greatest coach of all time. I loved playing against him because because he did things right."
