FISHERS, Ind. โ A new professional football team is coming to central Indiana, but it'll be a much different look than the Indianapolis Colts.
Dixie Wooten is the head coach and general manager of the Fishers Freight. He told 13Sports director Dave Calabro he's excited about indoor football coming to town.
"You know, just bringing a new thing to Fishers, you know, for the community, for the fan base. We wanna come out here and, you know, get a great start, so I'm ... I'm super excited," said Wooten.
We asked Wooten what fans should expect.
"It's exciting, you know, it's indoor, it's fast, it's physical, you know," Wooten said. "You've got eight-on-eight. Initially, you can play defense, you can run the football, so, you know, a fan that that loves the outdoor game can come in and get the fast pace but get a feeling of the outdoor game, so it's gonna be fun."
A Nov. 2 tryout event at Hamilton Southeastern High School is open to candidates nationwide and Wooten said they hope to see many local athletes.
"We have a tryout for everybody across the country, but we want to reach out to a lot of local people," he said. "Some of these guys, they have a chance to play in the big league, they didn't get the opportunity. Now you have it in Fishers."
The team will play in the Fishers Event Center, which will also host the Indy Fuel hockey team.
"Our games are being played when the NFL season is done. So for the football enthusiasts, you don't have to take a break from football," Indoor Football League commissioner Todd Tryon said. "It is action-packed, and we always like to say we're going to throw a big party, and at some point, a football game is going to break out, and there is something for everybody."
There are currently 16 teams in the Indoor Football League in 12 states, including franchises in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. The 19-week regular season runs from March to July.
