Carmel girls swimmers seek to extend record for consecutive state titles

They team is in pursuit of a national record 38th straight state championship.

CARMEL, Ind. — Domination.

Can you imagine a team winning 38 state championships in a row?

It's a prospect that could become reality for Carmel High School's girls swimming program.

The team has won 37 consecutive state titles in swimming and they want more.

The Lady Greyhounds put in the work to chase the rewards because winning is fun.

"It never gets," said coach Chris Plumb. "We're really excited about this year's team. We got a lot of top swimmers and some really good depth, so we can't wait for it."

"Oh man, that always gives me the chills when you say that," said Plumb. "But to me, it just means that we have another group of fantastic young women that could go on and be successful. Honestly, it's one year at a time. I try not to think about the number. I just, honestly ... one day at a time.

Plumb has won 17 state titles, which makes him the winningest coach in Indiana history in any sport.

"That is pretty cool," he said. "I mean, there's some great legend sports in our state of Indiana, so to be among those great coaches is just an honor."

And now the Lady Hounds are preparing to keep that national record going.

"Yeah, we never talk about it. I mean, it's omnipresent. You feel it when you walk in, you see the trophies everywhere. But honestly, we just, we handle our business each and every day, and that's what allows us the success to happen," said Plumb.

A winning tradition that started way back in 1986. The younger swimmers always pushing to do their part.

"The Carmel Swim Club is really what builds this program," Plumb said. "Then these guys watch what they do and they want to be a part of it, so it just builds on each other.
