(INDIANAPOLIS AP- June 19, 2004) - Lawrence Central senior Brian Deter held
Brownsburg to a pair of singles and struck out eight as the Bears
defeated the Bulldogs 3-1 Saturday night to become the IHSAA Class
4A baseball champions.
The game at Victory Field included 18 strikeouts and only eight
hits between the two teams.
Losing pitcher Lance Lynn (10-3) struck out 10, but three of the
hits he surrendered were for extra bases.
Lawrence Central (27-7) took the early lead in the second inning
when designated hitter Mike Mast tripled to deep center with two
out. He trotted home on Jake Lawson's double to right center.
Brownsburg (27-7) tied the game in the third. With two out, Alex
Hendrickson walked and moved to third on a throwing error by
shortstop Keith Yost, which also sent Nick Shipley to second.
Lynn was intentionally walked to load the bases, and T.J. Baumet
singled up the middle to drive in Hendrickson.
Deter (8-1), who threw 100 pitches, ended the threat when he got
Austin Nickol to strike out swinging on a 1-2 pitch.
Deter stranded six Brownsburg runners, including two in the
second inning. After a walk and fielding error put runners on
second and third with one out, Deter caught Cory Dragstrem looking.
Second baseman Matt Drown then made a diving catch of a line drive
to end the inning.
Lawrence Central regained the lead without hitting a ball out of
the infield in its half of the third.
With two out, Kyle McLaughlin reached first on a fielding error
by Shipley and moved to second on a wild pitch. He took third when
Craig Hormann reached on the second infield error of the inning.
Scott Pellman made Brownsburg pay for its mistakes with a single up
the middle to score the go-ahead run.
In the sixth, Hormann provided an insurance run by powering a
Lynn pitch over the fence in right-center.
Hormann received the IHSAA mental attitude award.
