INDIANAPOLIS — It seems like conference realignment is happening everywhere, and Indiana high school athletics are no exception.

Beginning in the 2025-26 school year, eight central and western Indiana schools will join a brand new conference called the "Monon Athletic Conference."

The new name and logo was announced Thursday afternoon, Feb. 22, and its founding members will consist of Cascade High School, Crawfordsville High School, Frankfort High School, Greencastle High School, North Montgomery High School, North Putnam High School Southmont High School and Western Boone Jr.-Sr. High School.

The new conference comes in the aftermath of a May 2023 decision in which Crawfordsville, Frankfort, North Montgomery, Southmont and Western Boone announced they would be departing the Sagamore Conference.

Remaining Sagamore Conference members Danville, Lebanon and Tri-West Hendricks will welcome Lafayette-area schools Harrison and McCutcheon, who are departing the North Central Conference.

The press release states that the name was choses "as a symbol of history and connection." All eight of the founding schools "sit directly along or within the old Monon Railroad corridor that connected Chicago to Indianapolis to Louisville."
