INDIANAPOLIS — The third week of Operation Football is already here! Dave's final season rolls into Indy's south side for a Circle City Conference showdown between two of the top-ranked teams in Class 4A!
The Roncalli Royals stayed in the top 10 in the IFCA coaches poll despite having their Week 2 game against Franklin Central be canceled due to inclement weather.
Meanwhile, the defending 4A state champions Bishop Chatard Trojans held true, staying in the No. 2 slot following the team's 28-7 win over Hanover Central, which was called at halftime, also due to weather.
The Royals are set to play their second game under new head coach Sam Otley. Otley replaces Eric Quintana, who resigned at the end of last season following a 4-7 record that saw the team struggle with a series of blowout losses to end the year.
Otley's Royals handed cross-town rival Southport an opening 37-13 loss behind four touchdown passes from senior quarterback Jayden Buchanan.
Chatard head coach Rob Doyle enters his eighth year coaching the Trojans following an incredible 2023 season that saw the team post an undefeated 15-0 record en route to their 17th IHSAA state championship.
The Trojans won a high-scoring barn burner in Week 1 over Brebeuf Jesuit. The Chatard offense scored 58 points and controlled the time of possession to not only start the season 1-0 overall, but also 1-0 in the conference.
With just four schools now in the Circle City Conference for football, each inter-conference matchup matters more in the overall quest for a conference title.
