Brownsburg wins first state title in 39 years with 22-17 win over Westfield

The Bulldogs scored two quick touchdowns in the fourth quarter en route to a 22-17 win over Westfield in the Class 6A title game.

INDIANAPOLIS — A big fourth quarter led the Brownsburg Bulldogs to their first state football championship in nearly 40 years.

Tied at 10 heading into the final stanza, the Bulldogs scored two quick touchdowns in the fourth quarter en route to a 22-17 win over Westfield in the Class 6A title game.

The Shamrocks scored the first 10 points of the game, including a touchdown by Deacon King. The Bulldogs closed the gap on a 71-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Oscar Frye to Kovon Sumpter-Bey on a third-and-19 play.

In the fourth quarter, Iosua Stephens found Branden Sharpe for a 20-yard touchdown. On the ensuing possession for Westfield, the Bulldogs blocked a Shamrock punt and returned it for a touchdown and a 22-10 lead.

The Shamrocks got a touchdown back on a King scoring run, then drove to the Bulldogs' 31-yard line with six seconds remaining. But their last-chance pass was intercepted at the goal line to seal the Bulldogs' first state title since 1985.
