GREENFIELD, Ind. — Juice. Compete. Standard.
The Greenfield Central way.
The Cougars finished the regular season with an unblemished record. Head coach Luke Meredith said winners know why they win.
"You know, there's been a target on our back and a lot of pressure as we got into mid-January and we were one of the only unbeaten teams in the state. I thought that pressure got to us sometimes in games," Meredith said. "After we got about 18-0, a lot of the kids just talked about, 'Let's just win out.' They just keep showing up every day and keep that same energy and that's what makes them special, just their preparation."
From 12 wins in Meredith's first year as head coach to a perfect 23-0 this season.
Star junior Braylon Mullins said this is a special group.
"It's fun going into every game. We all like each other. We all have a lot of fun when we're out there. Having fun is definitely the most important part because that's how people stay in contact and it's been a fun ride," Mullins said. "We came in this year and nobody thought we would do what we're doing right now, but we just kept it rolling for the whole year and we just want to prove people wrong in the sectionals."
While the ultimate goal is a state championship, top of mind is Greenfield-Central's first sectional championship since 1998.
"For us, it's cutting down the nets and winning a sectional and doing something that hasn't been done in a long time," said Meredith. "Our kids now expect to win and that's what we do and who we are."
