CareSource, a nonprofit health plan serving Hoosiers, has announced a new partnership with the Indiana Fever. Steve Smitherman, President of CareSource Indiana, discussed the goals and benefits of the association.

Steve Smitherman emphasized that CareSource is dedicated to serving individuals on various health insurance plans, including Hoosier Health Wise, the Healthy Indiana Plan, and the Health Insurance Marketplace exchange. The organization currently supports about a quarter million individuals across Indiana. What sets CareSource apart, according to Smitherman, is its holistic approach to health care. The health plan not only addresses physical health needs but also focuses on social well-being, covering essentials such as food, housing, transportation, education, and employment.

CareSource’s sponsorship of the Indiana Fever has been well-received by the community. The partnership has generated buzz and excitement, fostering a renewed connection between the community and the women’s basketball team. With the Fever experiencing high attendance rates and sold-out games, families and friends are gathering to enjoy women’s basketball, which many are doing for the first time in years. Smitherman pointed out that such community involvement can help reduce stress and improve mental health, a significant focus area for CareSource.

One of the key motivations behind the partnership is to encourage young women and girls to participate in sports. Smitherman shared concerning data showing that girls are twice as likely as boys to quit sports by the age of 14. By teaming up with the Fever, CareSource aims to inspire young women to get involved in sports and remain active. Smitherman brings personal insight to this initiative, having coached youth sports for over 20 years and witnessed the positive impact of sports on children's mental health and overall well-being.

This new partnership between CareSource and the Indiana Fever is poised to make a significant impact on the community, promoting both health and wellness. The collaboration underscores CareSource's commitment to supporting not only physical health but also the social well-being of Indiana residents. Through this partnership, CareSource and the Indiana Fever are fostering community engagement and encouraging the next generation to lead healthier, more active lives.
