Laura O'Brien, Corporate Communications Coordinator for Citizens Energy Group, shares details of the DigIndy Tunnel. "Two more of the DigIndy Tunnel system tunnels have entered operation. The White River and Lower Pogue's Run Tunnels together will prevent about 700 million gallons of sewage from entering our waterways annually."

Indianapolis' sewage systems were built over 100 years ago and designed to overflow excess sewage into Indianapolis waterways during heavy rain events. To combat this, the DigIndy Tunnel system will now divert sewage into these tunnels and store the sewage there until the treatment plants have capacity to treat it.

O'Brien comments, "When we opened the first 10 miles of the tunnel system from downtown Indianapolis to the county line on the south side. That segment of the tunnel system has already prevented more than 3 billion gallons of sewage from entering our waterways."
