Ashley Settle, ASC's Regional Director of Marketing, shares tips for communicating with loved ones who are living with Dementia.
"Their ability to process information is significantly delayed. So, really just keeping it short and simple, slowing down, giving them time to process what you've asked, and then plenty of time to formulate their response without feeling rushed can be helpful in keeping that communication flowing effectively."
A few other tips:
- Meet them where they are and go along with their preferred topics of conversation.
- Understand and stick to their routine. Assess what time of day might be best for a conversation.
- Should your loved one become agitated, just gently steer that conversation back to a safe and soothing topic is always best.
