SKAGEN, Denmark (WTHR) - People in Denmark lit bonfires along the coast to celebrate the summer solstice.
The midsummer festival originates in pagan and Viking traditions.
The Scandinavian celebration attracts crowds from all over Denmark and beyond.
It falls over the longest days of the year.
The sun barely disappears over the horizon, keeping the sky bright even in the middle of the night.
Simon Winther Nielsen, a student, celebrated in his own way. "I just went down to the fire and threw all my notes because now I'm done with school and it is a fantastic feeling," he said.
