TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — One of the more incredible images of Monday's total solar eclipse was captured by a teenager.
Elias Russell, a high school student from Michigan, was recording video and taking photos of the eclipse through his telescope as the moon passed in front of the sun.
After it was over, he realized he had captured something amazing. The teen had captured an airplane flying right over the sun as it was about halfway covered by the moon.
"I recorded the whole eclipse, and I take a lot of photos, and at the end of it, I have reviewed the footage, and I saw the plane going by, so I was able to take a screenshot and do a little bit of editing, and I got the photo," Russell said.
Capturing the perfect shot during the once-in-a-lifetime moment combined two of Russell's interests.
"I love astronomy, and I also like photography. I have like an old film camera that I like to use," Russell said. "I enjoy showing people telescopes and binoculars and how science works and everything in astronomy."
