Virginia Beach, VA., July 29 - Hundreds of miles from Thorntown, Indiana, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, police spent the past three days trying to determine whether a woman believed to have grown up in the coastal city is Shannon Sherrill.

Shannon was six-years-old when she vanished from her mother's yard back in 1986.

Indiana State Police Saturday asked Virginia Beach police to check names and addresses of a woman who may be Shannon Sherrill.

Police sources say that in cases like this they do a background check where detectives check for school enrollment, driving record, employment history and whether there's a criminal past.

Virginia Beach police say the information they gathered is now in the hands of Indiana State Police. "As of this afternoon we have concluded our assistance in that case. Unless there is something further and they contact us about, we're going to have no more investigation ongoing here in Virginia Beach."
