Southern Indiana restaurants start friendly competition with sign war

A playful feud is brewing outside two restaurants in southern Indiana, and it's all out in the open for customers to see.

SCOTTSBURG, Ind. (WTHR) — A playful feud is brewing outside two restaurants in southern Indiana, and it's all out in the open for customers to see.

A Popeye's and Taco Bell in Scottsburg are having an ongoing sign war to see who really is the best in town.

It all started when the Popeye's moved in next door to the long-standing Taco Bell on West McClain Avenue, creating a bit of competition.

Taco Bell put up a sign that said "We got beef with that chicken." The next day, Popeye's snapped back with their own sign: "Let's not taco bout it."

The rest of the war is history. Both restaurants keep coming up with their most clever phrases to put on their signs.

"Bean there, done that."

"Our thighs are nacho business."

"Ques closed."

The back-and-forth is a constant heated battle that the public is starting to get in on.

"We actually have people calling us now with suggestions," Taco Bell general manager Whitnei Ward told WAVE-TV.

Popeye's general manager, Jackie Brock said customers were saying they were coming in and eating just to see the signs. "So we put a suggestion box out."

Who is winning this war is strictly a matter of taste at this point. But the restaurants have decided there's only one way to squash the beef: a dance battle.

"They want to do a dance off and I'm game for that," Brock said.
