Shelbyville - Residents describe it as the last thing anyone would expect to find in rural Shelby County. It's a club called Topside Two, and its website describes it as one of the Midwest's oldest swingers clubs.
"It's a nice small town community."
Shelbyville, Indiana, quaint, charming, perhaps old-fashioned even.
"I like it because it's peace and quiet, not many people are around and I'd like it to stay that way," said one Shelbyville resident.
That's how things stayed until September 7.
"I have seen the sheriffs department go up and down the road very often."
Once the sun finally goes down beneath the cornfields along a rural stretch of Shelby County, one home opens up for business.
"It's a nice little farmhouse, you couldn't tell it by looking at it."
You couldn't tell that the house is Topside Two.
"The women were to pay $5 and the men were to pay $35 and they could I guess do whatever it is that they do," said a neighbor.
A swingers club, in and of itself, is not illegal. The problem is its location.
"In Shelby County we have ordinances which define sexual encounter groups. You have to do it in a properly zoned area."
The farm house is the third location for Gary James's club, after breaking previous zoning laws first in Indianapolis and then in Shelbyville. But this week, Shelby County's planning commission voted to shut it down again.
"You cannot have a home business such as this without being properly within our zoning."
The website only gives partial directions, then instructs patrons to call. The number is now out of service and when Channel 13 drove by Friday evening, it appears the business is as well.
