Protesters interrupt Carmel swearing-in ceremony

Demonstrators interrupted a speech by Sen. Todd Young during ceremonies to swear in newly-elected officials in Carmel.

CARMEL, Ind. — Pro-Palestine demonstrators interrupted a speech by Sen. Todd Young during ceremonies to swear in newly-elected officials in Carmel Thursday evening.

Young was speaking at the event Jan. 4 when protesters spoke out. Police led them out of the proceedings.

The ceremony marked the first time in nearly 30 years that Carmel has a new mayor. Jim Brainard served seven terms in the office after his election in 1996, but did not seek re-election last year.

Republican Sue Finkam won the November election with 57% of the vote. Thursday night, she said her top priorities are crime prevention and public safety.

"Our goal is nothing short of building the best-run city in America – a city where every resident feels secure, informed and actively contributes to our shared success," Finkam said.

The newly-elected city council, the clerk and a judge were also sworn in during Thursday's ceremony.
