INDIANAPOLIS — After over a year of campaigning, Micah Beckwith is celebrating a hard-fought victory.
On Saturday, Beckwith was selected as the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, putting him on the gubernatorial ballot in November alongside Sen. Mike Braun.
Delegates chose Beckwith over Braun's preferred candidate, State Rep. Julie McGuire, by a vote of 891 to 828 during the Indiana Republican Party State Convention.
"I want to say this about our next Governor, Mike Braun, I'm excited to work with that man," said Beckwith at the victory podium. "He's going to do great things for our state."
"My job as lieutenant governor will be to do everything I can to make him the most successful conservative governor in the entire United States."
Beckwith has been campaigning across the state for more than a year, telling delegates about his background growing up in an agricultural family. Today, he's a pastor, business owner and podcaster.
"Micah worked his tail off," said Sen. Mike Braun. "We did as well, but there's no doubt about this, I'm in charge and Micah is going to be someone that works with me and if he doesn't, I think it probably means it won't be as fruitful in terms of what we can get done."
While many expected delegates to select State Rep. McGuire, Beckwith remained confident the best candidate would win.
"I'm glad he picked Julie. I think it allowed the delegates to have a choice, said Beckwith. "I've never once saw Julie as a competitor, as an opponent. I see her as she was able to give the delegates a choice, as I was too. So I'm glad he chose someone."
