INDIANAPOLIS — Early voting continues at the Marion County voting center in downtown Indianapolis.
"It was smooth, the transition, the parking, the workers, everybody had a smile, so it was a good experience today," said Carla Williams, who had just finished voting.
On Tuesday, Nov. 5, poll workers will have more to look forward to.
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett announced poll workers who work Election Day will receive a pay increase.
"I am so excited about it," Marion County Clerk Kate Sweeney Bell said.
Bell hopes the raise will encourage more people to sign up to work Election Day.
Pay for Election Day workers will go from $100 to $180. Pay for Election Day inspectors will increase from $200 to $240 a day.
"These poll workers, I call them the 'angels of democracy' because they are doing the Lord's work," Bell said.
Registered voters and residents of Marion County can sign up, including teens ages 16 and 17.
"We've passed a resolution to allow high school students not only to get out of school, but also get some work experience and see what they're learning in their textbooks put into practice," Bell said.
According to Bell, poll workers begin as early as 5 a.m. until long after the last voter has voted at 186 vote centers across the county.
"That pay increase is going to be everything because when people take time out of their day to come and serve their community — they could be anywhere else, but they come and they serve. And when people serve the people, they deserve to get higher pay," Williams said.
