West Lafayette, Sept. 16 - A 22-year-old man was legally drunk when he crashed a plane near the Purdue University campus in March.
The crash killed Dustin Walters and his passenger, 34-year-old Tiesa Knoth, both of West Lafayette. According to an National Transportation and Safety Board preliminary report, Walters had a blood-alcohol content of .13. That's more than three times the legal limit for flying a plane, which is .04.
Walters had a pilot's license, but the NTSB says he did not have enough training to fly in the misty, overcast conditions about 5:45 a.m.
It will take a few months before a final report on the crash is released.
