BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Burke County family is thankful no one was hurt after a battery in a children's book caught on fire in their car.
The incident happened on Sunday, Aug. 25. According to George Hildebran Fire & Rescue, the family had just gotten out of the vehicle when their child's car seat caught on fire. Firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. Investigators determined that the fire was sparked when the battery got too hot and combusted.
Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident, which destroyed the child's car seat and damaged the vehicle's interior. The fire department shared photos of the charred remains on Facebook.
The book's publisher, Cottage Door Press LLC, issued a statement on the incident and confirmed the book used alkaline batteries, not lithium. The publisher included an image of the book's back cover showing the battery type.
"Our electronic children’s books, which have sold millions of units without incident, use alkaline batteries, not lithium ion batteries as reported. We are relieved that no one was injured, and are working closely with local officials and experts to determine the cause of this incident."
