FARMINGTON, Utah (KSL) - An avalanche in Utah killed an 18-year-old man Saturday.
Officials say the teen and his dad were snowmobiling at the top of Farmington Canyon north of Salt Lake City when the avalanche occurred.
The young man was caught in the snow and became trapped.
His father dialed 911 and said his son was wearing a blow-up backpack and a beacon. But the backpack failed to deploy.
Dozens of bystanders and rescuers helped dig the teen out.
After 20 minutes of digging, the 18-year-old was found unconscious and not breathing.
He was transported to the University of Utah Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
His identity has not been released.
Officials say a storm hit Friday morning leading to a significant avalanche danger in the area.
