INDIANAPOLIS — Hundreds of people rallied at Monument Circle Sunday to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The Indianapolis Muslim community, along with different Palestinian and Jewish groups, organized the rally.
"We want a ceasefire. We want the war to stop on the Palestinian people, and we want the siege to be lifted in Gaza," said Mohammad Abuhummos, who is a member of the Palestinian Youth Movement.
Over the weekend, many rallies were held in the country, and organizers in Indianapolis felt that holding a rally on Monument Circle was the way for local voices to be heard.
"This isn't only happening across the ocean. This is something that impacts real people's lives here in Indianapolis," said Malkah Brid, who is with Jewish Voice for Peace.
Speakers at the rally shared stories of their loved ones trapped in Gaza and why they are pushing for an immediate ceasefire. Organizers told 13News that rallies like this really let people see the connections Indianapolis has to the war.
"The power of the people will never be defeated," Abuhummos said. "They sympathize with other struggles — we don't really have anyone else but the people."
