COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTHR) - An Ohio police officer's body-worn camera captured dramatic video of a fellow officer who was administered Narcan during a drug arrest.
The video, obtained by WBNS-TV, our sister station in Columbus, shows an officer questioning a female suspect about a drug found in a vehicle during the arrest, trying to ascertain what his partner may have touched. The affected officer can be seen sitting in a second police vehicle.
OFFICER: "What is that? What is that that you have? No, No, No, what is that that you have in the car?"
SUSPECT: "She called it ICE, I swear to God that's what she called it."
OFFICER: "Is there fentanyl in it?"
SUSPECT: "Not that I know of."
OFFICER: "OK, well we have an officer having an effect right now."
The officer then helps another officer get the Narcan ready and administer it to the affected officer. Moments later, the officer starts coughing and heaving in the car and the officers help him to the ground until further help can arrive.
"You alright?" the officer with the body camera asked.
"Yeah," the injured officer replied.
The incident happened Sunday evening at a truck stop on the city's west side, the Columbus Dispatch reported. The officer's condition was not known at the time of that report.
Narcan is normally administered through the nose for people who have overdosed. The officers in this case administered the dose out an abundance of caution, not knowing
According to the CDC, exposure to fentanyl can come via inhalation or skin contact and can be fatal.
