Muncie, March 22 - Eighteen-year-old Brandon Patterson, clad in an orange jail jumpsuit, complete with handcuffs and leg irons, shuffled into the Muncie courtroom.

Patterson mumbled when answering questions, but said he understood the charges against him.

Patterson and 22-year-old Damien Sanders are charged with the murder of 20-year-old Karl Harford after the Ball State University sophomore willingly gave the two and a 14-year-old friend a ride.

Sanders and Patterson face 115 years in prison for murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. The motive is believed to be robbery. Harford had $2 on him at the time of the crime.

Relatives of the two accused hugged and grieved over the trials to come, but denied any interviews.

Patterson's pretrial is set for August 31 with a jury trial set for September 13.

Sanders' pretrial is set for Sept 24 with a jury trial on for October 4.

Sanders and Patterson both had court appointed attorneys for Monday's hearing. There is no word whether the accused will continue with those attorneys or get new representation on their own.
