GEORGETOWN, Indiana — A woman was killed in an early Saturday morning crash on Interstate 64 in southern Indiana.
According to a release from Indiana State Police, around 1:30 a.m. on June 1, Harrison County authorities were notified of a crash between a semi-truck and a pedestrian on I-64 near the Lanesville exit.
When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive woman in the roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say two semi-trucks were also at the scene.
According to police, one of the semi drivers told police he swerved to miss a pedestrian that was in the eastbound lanes but accidentally drove off the left side of the roadway and crashed into a cable barrier before coming to rest in the westbound lanes.
The second semi driver told police that he was traveling eastbound on I-64 approaching the Lanesville exit and was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian. The truck stopped in the right-hand emergency lane just east of the overpass and remained at the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had recently left her vehicle on the eastbound offramp onto Crandall Lanesville Road. Police say the woman walked off toward the interstate for an unknown reason before she was hit.
Investigators say they have not been able to identify the victim because she reportedly had several different ID's on her person that featured different names and states. Investigators believe the woman was from Colombia.
No drivers were cited during the investigation.
