LAWRENCE, Ind. — Police in Lawrence arrested a man for his alleged role in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian late Sunday.

Around 11:15 p.m. Nov. 5, first responders were called to the 4400 block of North Franklin Road, near Pendleton Pike, for reports of the crash.

Witnesses told officers a southbound car hit a pedestrian as they were crossing North Franklin Road at Records Street. The driver then continued traveling south on Franklin Road, the department said in a statement.

Singleton was taken in critical condition to Eskenazi Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

After reviewing video and license plate reader data from the area, detectives located a Chevy SUV allegedly involved in the crash, leading them to the man arrested, who police believe was the driver.

According to Lawrence police, the man told detectives he saw the pedestrian in the road too late to avoid hitting her, and he panicked and left the scene after the crash.

Police said businesses in the area contacted them to share video and also credited license plate reader cameras in identifying the car.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make final charging decisions in the case.
