INDIANAPOLIS — Early morning gunfire Tuesday hit a home in an Indianapolis neighborhood near West 30th Street and Georgetown Road.
One of the bullets struck a 72-year-old woman sleeping inside.
Metro police and the woman's family members say this attack likely targeted the wrong victim. Now, investigators want to catch the suspects and hope video of the suspect's car can help.
Security video recorded by the victim's neighbor just before 4 a.m. shows a light-colored sedan drive by. Thirty seconds later, you can hear gunfire explode down the street.
"We both heard, 'Tat tat tat! Tat tat tat tat tat!'" said neighbor Margie Reagan.
"Not like, 'Pop pop,'" added neighbor Christian Martinez, who made a more rapid-fire sound.
The attack on Digby Court, a few blocks from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, peppered the home with more than 20 gunshots - shattering windows, damaging siding, and hitting the woman inside.
She was shot in the chest as she slept, causing critical injuries.
"Oh goodness, I mean I pray that you know everything's all right with her and she recovers," Reagan said.
The victim's son told 13News his mother's condition is now stable in the intensive care unit at Eskenazi Hospital.
But overnight, his mom didn't even know she was shot. She called her son, saying she was having trouble breathing. Medics, once they arrived, found the gunshot wound.
"You wouldn't realize that you'd been shot. Because would that thought even enter your mind?" Reagan said. "Especially when you're someone who never causes any problems. You know, you're in your own home and suddenly, 'Bang bang bang!' and bullets come through?"
It wasn't just the house that was hit. Cars parked nearby were hit by gunfire, too. One vehicle had five bullet holes in the windshield and passenger side window.
"We don't feel safe. It's three, four in the morning and you hear, like, shooting? Oh my God, that's horrible," Martinez said.
Neighbors, family members and IMPD believe the attack was likely on the wrong house and that the suspects were targeting the wrong person.
The victim's son said the community needs to know this never should have happened and his mom never should have been hurt.
Now, investigators hope you recognize the car caught on camera. They also want people in the neighborhood to check their doorbell or security cameras for video.
IMPD said the suspects drove southbound after leaving Digby Court, so they'd have to wind around several streets before exiting the neighborhood, including Corwyn Road/Shirley Drive or Red Bird Drive/Eagledale Drive.
Meanwhile, people who live near where the shooting happened say they won't feel safe until the gunman is off the streets.
"I want to see the person caught, of course," Reagan said. "This is ridiculous."
