MONTICELLO, Ind. — The peaceful sounds of nature fill the Tecumseh Bend neighborhood in White County.
When people who live here woke up this morning, they were greeted with the river water all over the neighborhood.
The remnants of Hurricane Beryl dropped more than four inches of rain in parts of northwestern Indiana, swelling rivers as the rain drains off.
"It takes a while for this to go down once the river's even down below where it is. Now, it'll still be a big puddle here, just one of those things," said Donald, who has lived in Monticello for more than 40 years.
This isn't his first time dealing with the water.
"The floods are pretty normal. Everybody down here knows we're gonna get it, and they just let it go," said Donald.
His neighbor down the road, Curtis Herr, said his family is also no stranger to the water either. They took steps to prevent the damage by having their house lifted years ago.
"This used to be about five blocks lower, so they raised it." said Herr. "Don't really like it when it happens, but not much you can do."
Back down the road, Donald made sure to have things ready to go.
"I built my garage up 10 feet this time so I could have a higher garage, and I made shelves up in it," said Donald
He said it is unavoidable – so you might as well just protect your stuff.
"If it's going to flood, you know, you're going to have things on the floor. So we try to get everything up as high as we can. And then at that point, you can only do so much." said Donald.
As he looks across his back deck, that is level with the water right now – he's still thankful.
"I'm still alive" he said.
